Exploring “Rich and Poor Nations” through the Lens of Economics
The Asia Future Association (AFA), in collaboration with Hanoi University, successfully held an Economics Seminar and Student Exchange Program.
The seminar featured Dr. Nguyen Thuy, Associate Professor at Chiba University of Commerce and Chair of AFA, who delivered an inspiring lecture on two key themes: “Human Resource Development in the Global Society” and “Understanding Rich and Poor Nations from an Economic Perspective.”
Outstanding students with strong Japanese language proficiency was carefully selected to participate. Conducted entirely in Japanese, the session provided an engaging and practical introduction to topics such as the dynamics of Asian economies, the significance of Japan–Vietnam cooperation, and the mechanisms behind poverty and economic growth.
Dr. Thuy also introduced the Sustainable Livelihoods Framework, emphasizing the five types of capital—human, social, physical, natural, and financial—and discussed strategies for poverty reduction and inclusive development. She highlighted the power of education by quoting Nelson Mandela: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
The latter part of the seminar included group discussions, interactive Q&A sessions, and a mini workshop on academic writing, where students learned the basics of writing economic research papers. Participants expressed that the seminar was not only intellectually stimulating but also a valuable opportunity to reflect on their future career paths and contributions to society.
This event marked the first major collaborative activity following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between AFA and Hanoi University. It served as a meaningful step toward deepening bilateral cooperation. AFA remains committed to empowering the next generation of students and researchers across Asia by creating opportunities for international learning, dialogue, and academic collaboration.
