Nikkei Forum – The Future of Asia 2025, held in Tokyo, brought together political leaders and experts from across the region for a series of insightful speeches and in-depth discussions on the challenges and future prospects facing Asia.
Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba of Japan highlighted the importance of expanding the framework of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). In an era marked by rising global protectionism, his remarks reinforced Japan’s leadership in upholding a free, fair, and rules-based international economic order.
A recurring message echoed throughout the forum: Asia has once again emerged as a vital engine of global economic growth—and with that growing influence comes a profound responsibility. While economic integration remains essential, many speakers stressed that building mutual trust among nations is just as critical to ensuring lasting peace and stability in the region.
One particularly striking observation was how many of the speakers, regardless of country or background, emphasized the word “together”. This shared language underscored a strong collective desire for unity, cooperation, and inclusive progress in addressing Asia’s common challenges.
Now is truly Asia’s time to take a leading role on the global stage. It provided a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the region’s evolving responsibilities and immense potential. Realizing peace and prosperity in Asia will require not only governmental efforts, but also active collaboration across businesses, academia, and civil society.
The insights gained through this forum have provided more motivation for my ongoing work in research, education, and international collaboration.
