[Report] 3rd AFA Global Study Tour – Journey To Becoming Global Citizens

On Wednesday, November 27, 2024, the Asia Future Association (AFA) successfully held its 3rd Global Study Tour under the theme “Journey Toward Becoming Global Citizens.” The focus of this visit was “Exploring the Possibilities of a Multicultural and Inclusive Society through the Lens of Elderly Care and Welfare,” featuring a study program at Hakusan Welfare Association’s Special Nursing Home for the Elderly – Kanigaya in Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture.
Participants, including students from Chiba University of Commerce and Tokai University (approximately 20 in total), visited the facility to learn firsthand about the operations of the nursing home, the experience of Vietnamese care workers employed under the Specified Skilled Worker program, and the initiatives of the facility toward building an inclusive working environment.
We sincerely thank all members of the Hakusan Welfare Association for their kind hospitality and informative explanations, especially Mr. Takiyanagi, who played a vital role in organizing the visit. We are also grateful to the Vietnamese staff members who shared their candid thoughts and valuable experiences with the students.
The tour gave students a unique opportunity to deepen their understanding of Japan’s aging society and the essential role that foreign nationals—including many from Vietnam—play in supporting the Japanese welfare sector. Many students expressed that their perspectives on the caregiving industry had significantly shifted through this experience.
The participating students actively asked questions and engaged in the program with bright expressions throughout the visit, indicating just how meaningful this opportunity was for their growth.
We were especially inspired by the group’s clear commitment to equal opportunities in human resource development, which left a lasting impression on both faculty and students. Prof. Thuy, who played a key role in organizing this visit, has long viewed Japan as her second home and is deeply committed to building bridges between Vietnam and Japan. This program was realized through her initiative and in collaboration with Mr. Takiyanagi, under shared respect for prof. Koyama’s values and philosophy.
This joint program involving multiple universities was preceded by late-night preparatory sessions, highlighting the dedication of all participants. We believe this off-campus learning experience was a truly irreplaceable opportunity for students’ personal and academic growth.
Moving forward, AFA will continue to support educational exchange and promote multicultural coexistence through similar programs, in close collaboration with partner institutions.
Thank you once again for your invaluable cooperation and continued support.
